Improv Diary 5: Things to keep in mind when...
Beware disorganized & over signified movements energy skipping parts of your body; that is, hands and feet irradiating something (intention/energy/awareness whatever you want to call it) but somehow the legs are amiss, lost, obscured. Notes there’s “oversignification” when there is a lack of meaning/intention/awareness in the parts of the body that execute the movement ...

Improv Diary 4: Dancing after an injury
I should have written this a long long time ago. At the bare least I should have written the entry in the same month said improvisation happened. But I couldn’t. On December 23 I had to undergo surgery. This entry chronicles my first impro after that medical intervention. There was fear. An anxiety. Of reinjury, of course. But also of poor performance, of not measuring up. Of the...

Improv Diary: 2. Dancing in the street
Scared, intimidated, insecure, just plain lost and confused… I experimented all of these things at some point today. It never got to crisis point. They were almost always subtle, a steady current running below my skin underneath all the possibilities that the day brought forward. We had an improvisation marathon. On the street, right in the middle of a very transited area. Our stage: a...

Improv Diary: 1. Caught up in an improvisation
Yesterday was the first day in 2 months that I improvised. I started doing it almost without noticing. Somehow between warming up and undoing the muscle knot from hell I had somewhere on the left side of my lower back, I ended up caught up in an improvisation, carried by a slow but steady momentum to do something, be something, create and become. And I felt the wisdom gained during those 2 months...

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker statement about...
Food for thought on the copyright issue between Belgian choreographer De Keersmaeker and Beyonce’s video: Beyoncé is not the worst copycat, she sings and dances very well, and she has a good taste! On the other hand, there are protocols and consequences to such actions, and I can’t imagine she and her team are not aware of it. To conclude, this event didn’t make me angry, on the...

Angry pseudo self-help tip of the day
Look for that goddamned answer, even if you have no idea where to find it. Even if you know you won’t find it. After all, the point is not the answer itself, but to answer. To respond more than just react.

Pay attention to your email, “Re:” = to answer.
React. Reply. Respond. Refashion. Redo. Recycle even… if you dare. Dare. Most definitely dare. And remake. Reinvent. Reuse. Recreate. Research. Re-search. (Re)search. Re: search.

The answers
I’m starting to like not having the answers. It’s not causing me the anxiety it used to. I like not having the answers. It incites me to search, and research. It gives me the space to take a question in, to turn it over. And over. And yet again. And to create something in the process. I may not have the answers. But I’ve got the method.
